The Unshelved Pimp My Bookcart winners are up and available for the looking. Unlike the Bookcart Drill Teams where bookcarts have to have a semblance of structural integrity, some of these fanciful creations seem to have almost no functionality at all. La Biblioteca de la Universidad de Navarra y sus servicios 2.0

David Aznar, bibliotecario de la Universidad de Navarra nos puso al corriente hace unas semanas de las iniciativas 2.0 que están desarrollando en el servicio de bibliotecas, todas muy interesantes y novedosas y sobre todo enfocadas al usuario y en cómo lograr la participación de la comunidad a la que se dirigen.
- Barra del navegador y Gadget para iGoogle para buscar directamente desde el navegador en el Opac de la biblioteca. Un buen ejemplo de presencia, en donde la visibilidad de la biblioteca se une a la comodidad del usuario para consultar desde cualquier página (gracias al navegador) o desde tu página de inicio personalizada, los fondos del centro.
- Aplicación en Facebook: otro modo de dar visibilidad a los servicios de la biblioteca y acercarnos al público objetivo, los universitarios que viven y comparten su tiempo Facebook: “estar donde los usuarios están“.
Y lo que más me ha gustado es cómo han empezado a integrar las herramientas de la Web 2.0 en el catálogo de la biblioteca: sindicación de las novedades y últimas incorporaciones al fondo por temáticas, posibilidad de valorar los libros, enlaces permanentes a las búsquedas y registros catalográficos, integración con Google Books, inclusión de cubiertas de los libros, conexión con RefWorks para exportar la cita bibliográfica, etc.
Además, David Aznar, acaba de inaugurar un blog, Diario de un bibliotecario, en dónde nos mantiene al día de las novedades y servicios 2.0 que están implementado en la Biblioteca de la UNAV, así como noticias de interés bibliotecario para cualquier profesional interesado en estar al día.
Desde Deakialli felicitamos a David por la iniciativa y nos alegra conocer otro ejemplo más de Biblioteca Universitaria comprometida con la Web Social.

SearchWiki : Google personnalise ses pages de résultats

Google lance aujourd'hui le projet "SearchWiki", dont on entendait parler depuis plusieurs mois maintenant. Cet outil permet d'ajouter, de supprimer, de reclasser et de commenter les résultats de recherche du moteur pour une requête donnée, pour créer une ensemble de liens répondant parfaitement à l'attente de l'internaute. Yahoo! étend ses "glue pages" aux Etats-Unis

Au mois de mai dernier, Yahoo! avait lancé une expérimentation en Inde, appellée "Glue pages" dans ses pages de résultats. Pour certaines requêtes, les pages de résultats sont alors totalement différentes de ce que l'on connaît d'habitude : les résultats organiques, issus du moteur, sont présentés dans une fenêtre à gauche, et à droite apparaissent une biographie, l'actualité, des images, des Abondancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14327880089275554234noreply@blogger.com1

Chapeau à Europeana !

Hier 20 novembre 2008, Europeana, la bibliothèque numérique européenne, a été inaugurée.
Il y a 17 ans apparaissait le web, météorite géante qui n’a pas fini de faire trembler le monde, virtuel ET physique..
Depuis, trois web coexistent :
- le web coopératif, communautaire, personnel et interpersonnel, qui fut aussi l’Internet d’origine ;
- le web marchand, dont une des figures est la gratuité, et qui a réussi a absorber le premier en l’hébergeant et en tirant profit de l’activité non rémunérée des internautes (c’est l’informatique en nuages) ;
- enfin le web public, qui est aussi un web de service public.
Il est d’utilité publique que le troisième existe, lui aussi. C’est affaire de volonté politique. D’action déterminée des puissances publiques, à tous les niveaux. Ne serait-ce que pour cela (mais il y a bien sûr d’autres raisons de se réjouir), saluons Europeana. Dont le site a été tellement visité qu’il a dû être fermé au bout de quelques heures. ll’est toujours à l’heure où j’écris. Comme le rapporte l’AFP :
“En une heure ce matin, 10 millions de personnes ont essayé d’avoir accès à la bibliothèque. Jamais une initiative européenne n’a eu autant de succès”, a commenté Viviane Reding, la commissaire européenne chargée des nouvelles technologies, lors du lancement officiel.

A few links that have been keeping me from inbox zero for the past few weeks.
- “…the increased popularity of the Internet in America has not been correlated with an overall increase in reported sexual offenses; overall sexual offenses against children have gone steadily down in the last 18 years” Note: this does not say “oh the internet is safe!” It just says that the internet getting more popular doesn’t correlate with sexual offenses against children. More from the Research Advisory Board of the Internet Safety Technical Task Force
- Speaking of Berkman people, I’ll be hanging out in the Boston area over the turkey weekend and likely going to this event that Saturday. Anyone in the area should consider going, it looks like fun.
- Evergreen is gaining traction as an ILS that works even for big/complicated systems. The Traverse Area just went live with their Evergreen implementation. Doesn’t that look nice? More about Michigan’s open source ILS project.
- I’ve been reading more lately. I read Cory Doctorow’s book Content (my review) and think it should be required reading for librarians or anyone else in the various digital content industries. If you’d like a copy, you can read it for free online, or if you’re a librarian or a teacher, you can request a donated copy from the website. I already gave mine away.
- FCC broadband bill passed. This might help Farmer Bob [my generic term for the people over on this side of the digital divide] get broadband.
- Pew Report “When Technology Fails” (and even really great technology sometimes does). The results will likely not surprise the librarians. “15% of tech users were unable to fix their devices” and “48% felt discouraged with the amount of effort needed to fix the problem.”

Europeana: la Biblioteca Digital de la UE

Ha nacido la Biblioteca Digital Europea que incluye monografías, revistas, manuscritos, música... en los 23 idiomas de la Unión Europea.
Estoy intentando acceder desde http://www.europeana.eu/ pero carga muy despacio, así que aún no puedo opinar por experiencia propia. Mal empezamos.
Por lo que leo el patio está complicado: Más de la mitad de los archivos provienen de Francia, con menos de 1% de documentos de España. Según elmundo.es, un portavoz de Europeana atribuye la poca presencia de España, Alemania o Italia a la falta de digitalización en estos países (Me extraña de Alemania).
Desde España, sólo la Biblioteca Nacional ha facilitado los archivos digitales; la Biblioteca del Insituto Cervantes los ha mandado, aunque aún hay problemas técnicos para introducirlos en Europeana. El Museo del Prado no participa todavía en el proyecto. o_O
Da la sensación de que el portal está todavía muy verde, les daremos tiempo para que mejoren.

Google propose un nouvel outil pour rechercher des mots clés

Google vient de lancer un nouvel outil baptisé "Search-based Keyword Tool". Il vous demande l'adresse d'un site web (donnée obligatoire) ainsi que des mots clés (facultatifs) pour cibler la recherche, et il vous propose en résultat un certain nombre de requêtes, avec le nombre de fois où elles ont été saisies sur le moteur chaque mois, une suggestion d'enchère si vous désirez acheter des liens Abondancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14327880089275554234noreply@blogger.com1

Google Lively, c'est terminé !

A peine lancé, déjà torpillé... Le projet Lively, monde virtuel en 3D lancé en juillet dernier, dans lequel il était possible de créer son avatar et de discuter et interagir avec d'autres utilisateurs présents en ligne, vient d'être arrêté par Google, son concepteur. Le moteur estime qu'il s'agissait là d'une expérimentation qui n'a pas porté ses fruits. Google vient de mettre en ligne un site spécialisé sur les archives du mythique Life Magazine, regroupant 2 millions de photos (8 autres millions sont prévues à l'avenir), de nombreuses d'entre elles n'ayant jamais été publiées, selon Google. Elles sont proposées par décennies, depuis 1860 jusqu'au années 1970. Il est également possible d'effectuer des recherches sur ces images directement sur Abondancehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14327880089275554234noreply@blogger.com0

Jerry Yang quitte Yahoo!

Jerry Yang a annoncé cette semaine qu'il allait quitter la société Yahoo! dont il était redevenu le CEO depuis un an et demi. Il reste au Conseil d'administration mais ne gérera plus l'avenir du portail américain. C'était à prévoir après les échecs des semaines passées (rachat avorté par Microsoft, fin du deal avec Google, rapprochement problématique avec AOL, etc.). I’m lucky enough to be speaking at next month’s Online Information 2008 conference in London, where I’ll be speaking about new media channels for libraries (in other words, getting your content out in front of users where they already are). I’m in the Brave New World for Libraries and Publishers track on day one, but there are many sessions at this media conference that should be of interest to librarians. I’m looking forward to seeing sessions in the Order Out of Chaos: Creating Structure in Our Universe and Information Professionals Surviving and Thriving in the New Age, among others. I’ll also be moderating the Knowledge Structuring in a Semantic World session on day two.
The conference organizers have just posted a podcast interview with me, which is just one in a series with some of the speakers. They’ve organized quite a line-up of presenters, starting with conference opener Clay Shirky (hear his interview here). If you’ve never heard Clay speak, I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. I guarantee you won’t regret it.

Curso de Vigilancia Tecnólogica, otra vertiente de la profesión

ruminating about privacy

I was emailing with a friend this week and he was saying how it seems strange that librarans are so aggressive in their defense of privacy while at the same time the population seems to be more and more shifting towards openness and “hey here’s my list of books” behavior outside of their library. I always draw the line between what people reveal about themselves versus what their institutions reveal, or must legally disclose, about them.
I also often feel that one of the reasons we’re in this strange place is because many privacy issues are ones that technology could be solving for us. Yet, at the same time the technology we’re working with doesn’t allow us the granularity of making, for example, patron reading information available in the aggregate while still keeping the patron’s identity completely private. We have many patrons
Patron 1 wants to make sure no one ever knows what they are reading. Tells the OPAC to not keep his reading list. Knows his PIN. Wants to make sure the public access PCs don’t retain records of the sites he’s visited. Is a bit horrified that the library data we do keep isn’t in some way encrypted or otherwise protected.
Patron 2 wants to know every book she has ever checked out. Wants the library to leave the name of the book she has on hold on her answering machine. Wants her friend to be able to pick the book up for her at the library. Doesn’t remember her PIN and finds it vaguely annoying that she needs more than her library card number to use the OPAC.
A privacy solution that works for Patron 1 becomes a usability impediment to Patron 2. While libraries have the responsibility to keep both patrons’ data safe, they also have the responsibility to be usable and accomodating to both patrons. Technology, in my opinion, can address these issues but librarians have to a) embrace it b) request it from their vendors c) be willing to tolerate the learning curve that comes with any new technology.
I’m off to the tiny library today to help them with their slow automation project. In the meantime, these are the articles I have been reading about privacy lately. They’re about the information the mailman has, not the librarian, but it could apply to any of us at our job as well. The blog post is about an NPR story following a mail carrier on her route. She talks about what she knows about the world and the economy based on what people are getting delivered. She is supposed to keep people’s mail private, and she never mentions any names. Yet, there’s a lot of metadata in mail delivery, things the mailman knows. The blog’s author wonders how simple it would be to identify the people getting mail delivered from the information the mail carrier imparts. Feel free to read the rest.
